Not strictly in the Stinkmix/Stinkbombs series but this is one that needs to be amongst the best as it’s a little belter. When Bobby ‘Digital’ Dixon passed on 21 May 2020 I wanted to find a way to pay some personal tribute to one of my favourite latter day producers from Jamaica and a lovely, humble geezer.
I’ve always felt that his version sides were superior to most everyone (King Jammy, Penthouse, Steelie & Clevie and a few others could quibble but not many) in the 90s dancehall game, this selection taken from just a 3 year period shows why. Early out it’s mainly classic Studio One etc rhythms yet Bobby D always seemed to inject something extra, the snares crack and sing, the bass threatens seismic activity. Moving forwards into the later stages it’s bumping 90’s promo basement with big rhythms like the Mud Up, Quarter To Twelve and of course the rhythm that inspired entire musical movement the Dem Bow. Over the top are snatches of recordings made at the legendary Rons Road studio in Kingston from 1993 when alongside photographer Jason Burgess & George we got to spend some time there with Barrington Levy, Dirtsman, a sound out of Washington DC, Bobby’s overbearing mate and the man himself. Scratch and crackle comes at no extra charge all taken off vinyl apart from the intro special with Scatta which was actually voiced at Main Street by Danny Browne and crew in 95 though it’s a Bobby D rhythm (off cassette too no less).
